The Wiivengers is everything you wanted from a Nintendo/Avengers Mash up

I’ve written about it before, but I really want to see an Avengers style series of Nintendo animated movies leading to one big team up. It’s all just a pipe dream though unfortunately so this might be the closest I’ll ever get to it.

Will Ratchet and Clank spark an animated video game movie revolution?

Next year sees the release of one of my most anticipated movies. Not Avengers 2 or Star Wars Episode VII (though obviously I can’t wait) but instead I’m talking about the Ratchet and Clank movie.

I love Ratchet and Clank. When I first bought my PS2, Ratchet and Clank was part of the selection of games that you could get it with. Of course I picked Ratchet and Clank, I love video games about anthropomorphic animals jumping around collecting things. When I started playing it I felt like that kid playing his Mega Drive again. And it was funny, like the cutscenes were hilarious. And all the different worlds in the game looked beautiful. I remember going PlayStation Experience in like August, getting a demo for the Ratchet and Clank 2 and playing that level over and over again until Christmas, when I finally got the game. So imagine my excitement when I heard a Ratchet and Clank movie was coming out. With the same writes and the same voice cast!

I’ve seen a few different websites and some podcasts discuss the possibility that we re on the cusp of  a video game movie revolution, with next year’s releases of a new Hitman film and Assassin’s Creed with adaptations of Uncharted, The Last of Us, Splinter Cell and Metal Gear Solid to follow in the coming years. Are we about to see video game movies taken seriously? My thing is though, is that all these films are based on semi-realistic games, especially in terms of graphics.

Any time I see articles this list I search to see if Ratchet and Clank is mentioned but most of the time it’s not, which is a real shame. The Ratchet and Clank movie could be the first video game movie which truly captures the feel of the game, with writers and voice actors from the game involved. We are also getting a Sly Cooper game the year after with the same deal, writers and voice cast from the game. This is something that is needed, people that know the world of the game, people that understand the characters, who love the mythology, working on the movies.

My hope is that if the film is a success video game companies, I’m looking at you Nintendo, will give up the chase to make a live action adaptation and choose to go with animation. I would love to see a Mario movie in CGI, or imagine A Legend of Zelda movie, hearing that theme in cinema surround sound.  Or what if we got a series of Nintendo solo movies, Mario, Link , Donkey Kong, Kirby, Captain Falcone and Samus with an Avengers style, Super Smash Bros team up at the end.

Just this past June it was announced that a Sonic movie was being made as a blend of live action and CGI, and as much as I was excited because it’s Sonic, I also don’t really want to see Sonic running around the real world, I want to see a fully realised animated Green Hill Zone or Casino Night Zone, with an updated soundtrack.

Another thing I would love to see is an Legend of Korra style Mortal Kombat animated series, not Defenders of Realm style though. The Mortal Kombat mythology is deep, encompassing thousand of years dozens of characters and several different realms, it would make an amazing mature animated series, allowing for blood and fatalities and all that good stuff you expect from Mortal Kombat.

Or maybe the success of Ratchet and Clank and Sly Cooper will lead to some more of the PlayStation platform games getting movies. Jak and Daxter is a possibility or LittleBigPlanet.

Or looks get some of the classics, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Gex, Rayman, Mega Man, Banjo, there is a whole treasure trove of marketable video game characters with fully realised worlds that would make great animated characters. I just hope that Ratchet and Clank can turn people’s heads and change video game studios minds about what can be done with an adaptation.

Saying that, there is one movie I would love to see, a few years ago I saw a fanmade trailer for, where a group of scientists have created Pac Man and it looked amazing. That’s one anthropomorphic character I wouldn’t mind seeing in the real world.
