Rejoice, Michael B Jordan and Ryan Coogler Reunite for Black Panther

I have not been on this blog for a while, but I have been meaning to return and what better way to return, what better news to return to, than the news of Michael B Jordan joining the cast of Black Panther.

Creed was one of my films of the year (in 2016 because it came out late in the UK) and the chemistry between Coogler and Jordan is undeniable, in fact I saw a few comments online lamenting that Jordan couldn’t be the Black Panther (I’m sure minds were changed after they saw Chadwick Boseman kill it in Civil War).

With Coogler behind the camera I hope we get more epic scenes like this one:

Is LL Cool J joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Yesterday, Ladies Love Cool James AKA the GOAT tweeted this:

setting the internet ablaze. This is very exciting, being a huge rap fan, there’s nothing like seeing 2 worlds you love collide, like when the WWF released the Aggression album or Ghostface turning up in Iron Man 2.

Speculation of course has already started on who he will be playing, with Luke Cage being the favourite despite LL’s tweet of it being a movie, maybe it’s an indication that Luke Cage won’t just be turning up on the Netflix shows but in the movies as well. Others think he may turn up in Black Panther.

Can we get Canibus as his villain though?

Benedict Cumberbatch in negotiations for Doctor Strange

Benedict Cumberbatch joins another franchise you love as Deadline is reporting he is Marvel’s choice for the role of Dr. Strange. It was a matter of time before he started in a superhero film and Dr. Strange suits him. It also continues Marvel’s run of casting actors from cult TV shows, with this being the most high profile casting.

Tumblr is going to shut down when he interacts with the other Avengers.

What is going on with Spider-Man?

Over the past few days, we’ve seen a couple of rumours emerge regarding Sony’s Spider-Man franchise and it begs the question, what are they doing?

The first rumour that came out  was that they were looking to strike a deal with Marvel to get him in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and make him part of the Avengers. For many this is the dream scenario. Spider-Man, at one point anyway, was Marvel’s guy, he is up there with Batman and Superman in terms of recognition, and I’m sure Marvel would love to get him back. I also like the idea of having someone younger in the Avengers, like the episode of Avengers Earth’s Mightiest Heroes where Spider-Man and Captain America work together, the idea of having a younger person in the role, someone who looks up to the Avengers is great for children watching it who will see themselves in the role.

The other rumour going around is that Sony are planning a soft reboot of their 2 year old Spider-Man franchise and are going to use the Sinister Six to launch it with possibly someone else in the Spider-Man role. It worries me that one not so great box office turnout is leading to this to this.

Yo Sony, if you want a re-boot, please not another Peter Parker, how about this guy

we don’t need  a 3rd Peter Parker just yet,  switch it up, the Miles Morales character is popular, it adds a new dimension and we’ll get a PoC in a main superhero role, which is what people have been asking for for the longest. So Sony, we want a new twist on Spider-Man, he’s your guy.

Or just cast Donald Glover as Spider-Man and watch the internet explode.

Doctor Strange gets July 8th 2016 released date, could it open up the supernatural Marvel world?

Screen Daily are reporting that production on Marvel’s Doctor Strange film will start mid 2015 with Marvel giving it the July 8 2016 release date. Marvel of course have release dates planned for the next 90  something years and have a whole host of characters to fill them.

It is not however known who will be playing the title role. Joaquin Phoenix is heavily rumoured but it seems like contract negotiations have held up his announcement. Fan favourites like Pedro Pascal of Game of Thrones and Benedict Cumberbatch, but to be fair Benedict Cumberbatch is rumoured for everything. Jon Hamm also recently shot down rumours that it was going to be him, though surely it’s a matter of time before he appears in a superhero film.

Another big rumour is that this film will not be an origin story, instead starting with Doctor Strange in full control of his powers and that that is how Marvel films will function from here on in. This is an interesting choice, particularly with a character like Doctor Strange, who while having an animated movie depicting his origin a few years ago, has never had an animated story and as not as widely known as someone like say Spider-Man, whose origin story has been told to us through various animated series but we still saw 2 different origin films for him with an 11 year period. Similarly Batman is someone who I don’t think we need to see another origin story for again.

This film marks the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first delve into the supernatural world of Marvel, once again expanding the wide scope of Marvel especially after the success of this year’s Guardians of the Galaxy. The interesting thing about the Marvel movies is that they’re not superhero movies, they’re movies with superheroes in them. So Guardians of the Galaxy was a space opera while Winter Soldier was a political thriller yet they all exist in this one universe. With them delving into the supernatural, could the rumour of Wesley Snipes returning as Blade be tied in with this, they have after all both been part of the Midnight Sons along with another character who Marvel got the rights back to, Ghost Rider. Marvel have taken to doing team ups outside of their Marvel movies, with Black Widow and Falcon of course appearing in Winter Soldier, so maybe 2 of the most iconic supernatural Marvel characters could make an appearance in Doctor Strange.
